Irish Singer Sinead O’Connor Revert To Islam And Name to 'Shuhada'

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor announced that she has reverted to Islam and changed her name to “Shuhada”. She said her decision was “the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.” She spells her new name, which means “one who bears witness” in Arabic, with an apostrophe at the end. Shuhada’ comes from the Arabic word Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith in which Muslims state (or bear witness to) their belief that there is only one God and Mohammed is his final prophet.

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor recent posts have included her singing the Islamic call to prayer, the Azan, and depicted her wearing a hijab.

Many Muslims and others on social media have greeted the news of her conversion warmly, though others already have criticized her for reciting the adhan as a woman. And there are some posting anti-Muslim remarks or positing that it’s just another phase for a woman who already has morphed through several personal and religious identities.

The 51-year-old has tweeted that she is “very, very happy,” and apologized for mispronouncing some Arabic words during her recitation of the Azan.

In a press release, the IMPIC underscored the idea that Davitt had taken the step thoughtfully: “Her coming to Islam has been a careful and informed decision and follows a lifetime of searching and study … At this early stage, she has asked for her privacy to be respected so she can focus on her own spiritual well-being.”

Al-Qadri said in the statement, “Shuhada has faced many challenges in her life. Where there is light, darkness has tried to envelop it, the greater the light, the greater the struggle with darkness.”

The 52-year-old, who battled mental health problems for years but seems to be doing well judging from the interview, revealed that her father is learning more about Islam.

Causes for Revert To Islam

The following year, O’Connor was reported missing in Chicago when she did not return from a bike ride. But police found her a day later.

“People who suffer from mental illness are the most vulnerable people on Earth,” O’Connor said. “You’ve got to take care of us. We’re not like everybody.”
